Recognizing Domestic Abuse

PHYSICAL VIOLENCE

  • One of the most identifiable signs of domestic abuse is outright violence. Hitting, slapping, kicking, punching, pushing, and so on are all signs of an abusive relationship, and victims of this behavior should seek help as soon as safely possible. Also, look out for abandoning in unfamiliar places, withholding access to food, sleep, or healthcare. These are also physical abuse.

BULLYING OR MAKING THREATS

  • A partner making unwarranted accusations of infidelity, criticizing their spouse constantly, controlling their appearance, yelling and screaming at their spouse, or making violent threats is engaging in domestic abuse.

CONTROLLING MONEY

  • A person that has a stranglehold on the household income is engaging in domestic abuse. Signs of this include keeping cash and credit cards from their spouse, giving them a limited allowance, making them explain their spending, controlling their income, stealing money from their spouse or their friends, or withholding money for necessities.

SOCIAL ISOLATION

  • A partner that keeps a close watch on their spouse’s daily movements is likely committing domestic abuse. This can also be present in controlling where they go, when they go, and with whom. An abusive partner may even intentionally embarrass their spouse in front of friends and family, making the spouse want to avoid social engagements.

SEXUAL ABUSE

  • An abusive partner will often force their spouse to have sex against their will, make them dress provocatively, or make the spouse feel guilty for not having sex. They may also refuse contraceptives against their spouse’s will.
