Counseling FAQs

COMMON MYTHS ABOUT COUNSELING

Many people envision counseling as something for those with “problems,” “issues,” or those who can’t seem to help themselves. Some people think only “crazy” people go to counseling. You can thank the movies for this misconception. In reality, nothing could be further from the truth. Counseling is for everyone, from individuals to families and teens. Humans are imperfect. We all carry baggage either from childhood, adulthood, or just from this world we live in, whether inadvertently or otherwise. Here at Sunset Counseling in Tooele, we offer compassionate counseling services for everyone to help either deal with past hurts, present pains, or even future worries. We can help. Reach out today!

HOW DO YOU GET STARTED WITH COUNSELING?

Here at Sunset Counseling in Tooele, when you reach out to us, our office manager will talk with you to find a counselor that would be a good fit for you (whether you are seeking a relationship counselor, a family counselor, or the like), given the issues you would like to address and your schedule. Our office manager will get some basic information from you, set up the initial 90 minute appointment, and send you an invitation by email to our online portal. There you can review our practice documents and complete some brief questionnaires before your initial counseling appointment to help your counselor get to know you.

WHAT IS THE FIRST COUNSELING SESSION LIKE?

During the initial 90 minute assessment, the counselor at Sunset Counseling in Tooele will talk with you about your history, your current situation, and your counseling goals. This session is very laid back and meant to allow you to get to know your therapist a bit more and see if you will work well together. Based off this session, your individual counselor will then make recommendations for treatment and together you will set some treatment goals and make a plan for upcoming sessions.

HOW LONG DOES THE THERAPEUTIC PROCESS TAKE?

The therapeutic process can be short or it can be long. It looks different for each person. During follow up counseling sessions, you will talk with your individual counselor about the issues you are dealing with and how they are affecting your life. This will help both you and the counselor to have a better understanding of your situation. The counselor will provide you with tools to gently work through your struggles using any of a variety of researched based intervention methods and techniques. At Sunset Counseling in Tooele, our mission is to help you live a happy, more fulfilled life. We will work with you until you get to that point. Call us today!

AM I CRAZY OR WEAK IF I GO TO THERAPY?

The best way to answer this question is with an analogy. When you break a bone, do you go to a doctor to get it fixed? When your teeth hurt, do you see a dentist to find out what’s wrong and then get your problem addressed so your teeth will stop hurting? The same goes for counseling. When you are not well emotionally or psychologically, you need to see a specialist — a therapist — to help diagnose the problem and offer up solutions to help you get back on the mend. Ailments are all the same, and most need professional help to solve the problems. The therapists at Sunset Counseling in Tooele can give you the tools to heal. Reach out today to learn more!

WHAT IS THE THERAPIST’S RESPONSIBILITY?

Primarily, a therapist’s responsibility is to offer you emotional and psychological support and help. Therapists help you deal with everyday stresses, help in crises and relationship problems, counsel you in abuse cases, and offer any other support services to guide you to overall well-being in all aspects of life, from emotional, physical, spiritual, and psychological. Our job is to listen, to understand, to evaluate, and then to come up with a treatment plan that involves giving you specific tools you’ll need to heal and deal with whatever you are struggling with in life. Sunset Counseling in Tooele offers the best therapy services. Reach out today!

WHAT IS MY RESPONSIBILITY IN THERAPY?

Many therapists have a saying: “We work with patients, not on patients.” Many people who come to Sunset Counseling in Tooele for individual therapy, group therapy, or any other kind of counseling service we offer are broken. They have no idea how to fix whatever is wrong. As therapists, our job is to guide you and offer you tools and solutions to help you heal and move towards health, happiness, and a sound state of well-being. That being said, you have to do the work involved. Therapy is not a passive activity. You have to want to get better and to do the work your counselor recommends in order to succeed. Reach out today for help!

DO YOU PRESCRIBE MEDICATIONS?

Here at Sunset Counseling in Tooele, we do not prescribe medications. If you feel that is warranted in your case, or if our counselors discover you may need therapeutic medications, we can either refer you to someone that does prescribe medications or communicate with another provider that can help coordinate your care. Reach out today to get started!

HOW CAN I PAY FOR THERAPY?

Payment is due at the time of service. We accept cash, check, and all major credit cards (including your HSA card) as forms of payment. You may also pay through our Online Portal.

We do not accept insurance plans outside of Tooele County Medicaid but are glad to provide you with a detailed receipt (superbill) to help you seek reimbursement from your insurance company. Please check with them regarding your benefits. We also accept payment from religious clergy.

THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS MAY BE HELPFUL TO ASK YOUR INSURANCE PROVIDER TO DETERMINE YOUR BENEFITS:

  • Does my health insurance plan include mental health benefits?
  • Do I have a deductible? If so, what is it and have I met it yet?
  • Does my plan limit how many sessions per calendar year I can have? If so, what is the limit?
  • What is the coverage per therapy sessions for an out-of-network provider?
  • Is approval required from my primary care physician in order for services to be covered?
  • This will help you to make an informed decision about whether it’s worth seeking reimbursement.

Please also keep in mind that you will need to qualify for a mental health diagnosis in order for your insurance to reimburse you for services. This mental health diagnosis will remain on file with the Medical Information Bureau. Also, insurance does not usually cover relationship/marriage counseling. If you don’t feel this will work for you, we can help you find another provider that is on your insurance provider panel.
